He completed both his undergraduate and post-graduate training at the University of Sydney, and his Fellowship training through the Australian College of Physiotherapists. He has worked exclusively as a Specialist Spinal Physiotherapist since 2007.
Michael has held many leadership roles in the profession of physiotherapy including a number of terms as the President of the Australian College of Physiotherapists, and continues in an active role with the College teaching and examining training specialist physiotherapists. He maintains an ongoing Fellowship at Macquarie University and lectures outside his university appointment to physiotherapists, doctors and other practitioners on spinal conditions.
Michael has over 30+ years of clinical experience and is acknowledged within physiotherapy, and beyond, as a leader in the physiotherapy profession in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of spinal conditions. His clinical practise, based out of his rooms in Sydney’s CBD, spans clinical consulting, teaching, mentoring, providing advice and guidance to other physiotherapists, research and acting as a medicolegal expert witness.
Michael enjoys working closely with Dr Pope to ensure our patients achieve the best outcome possible. Whether it’s trying to avoid surgery if possible and managing and treating appropriate conditions conservatively, or if it’s working closely with Dr Pope to prepare you for surgery, or take you through your post-operative care, Michael will work closely with Dr Pope and you to make sure you achieve the best outcome possible.
Michael is passionate about working closely with his patients to help you establish and achieve your goals. He provides sensible, practical, evidence-based advice to clearly establish what can be done, discussing with you how long that will likely take, and what he can do and what you need to do, and not do, will be clearly discussed and a plan jointly agreed upon.
Your goals and your needs will underpin any course of treatment with Michael, whether it’s taking you through a full course of treatment, working with and guiding other physiotherapists and providers to ensure you are being looked after optimally, or working closely with you and Dr Pope to make sure everything that can be done gets done, will be what Michael can help you with. Clearly establishing how to prevent future problems will always be part of what Michael includes in your course of treatment, be that one consultation with him, or a course of care.
